Swan Rangers Hike Back Door to Crater Lake

Eleven Swan Rangers hiked the "back door" into Jewel Basin's Crater Lake on Saturday, August 25, via Wolf Creek Canyon and a sketchy-in-places bear and goat trail! (Photos by Keith Hammer).

It was a wonderful, cool "fall" day, with lots of piles of bear scat and undigested huckleberries along the way!

When do we get to the steep part?

And when does the bushwhack begin?

So the trail does side-hill in places!

Ah, into the alpine!

And there's Crater Lake, with Mount Aeneas in the background!

The Swan Rangers meet every Saturday at the Echo Lake Cafe for breakfast at 7:30, leaving at 8:30 for a partial day outing in the northern Swan Mountains and foothills.

They carpool from the Swan River School parking lot next to the Cafe.

When hiking in bear country, remember to carry bear spray and avoid the 3-D's: dawn, dusk, and darkness.

Everyone is welcome!
